otherwise

I have decided to reissue the e-book of Otherwise.

(This edition contains notes on what inspired me in the writing of each poem, as well as a small number of photographs.)

However, I am doing something a little unusual with it. Instead of paying me for the book, I will send you a copy in return for you donating to a charity.

If you would like a PDF copy of Otherwise, either for yourself or to give to someone else, then please donate a small amount, such as you consider appropriate, to one of the following organisations. To be fair, I will want proof of some kind - although if you're putting a dollar or two into the McDonald's donation jar, you won't have a receipt. Something like a cellphone photo would do, or you could write about it on your weblog. That way, I can share what people are doing.

Money isn't the issue here. Not only are e-books currently undervalued, but I don't rate my own little volume as being worth much. I just thought this might be a small way to do something nice for the world.

Furthermore, it's important for me to say that often I don't have a couple of dollars to put towards an entertainment item like a book. Or at least I have the money but can't justify spending it when there are other, more important purchases to be made. I know in this economy other people share that situation. I would not want anyone to feel bad if they can't afford to donate to a charity right now!

Therefore, you might choose instead to ...

* write a letter to a political prisoner
* volunteer for a couple of hours
* advertise the charity on your website
* write to a politican about Guantamano Bay
* donate clothes to a welfare bin
* donate quality second-hand toys to your local childrens' hospital
* teach a group of kids about animal rights
* buy a cruelty-free bottle of shampoo or soap instead of your normal brand

or in some other non-fiscal manner support the charity of your choice from the following list.

I am providing this selection because I would not support all charities, and these ones best represent what is most important to me: helping those who can not help themselves, especially children, animals, and victims of politics.

Ronald McDonald House (or your local children's hospital)
Amnesty International (or any charity which helps survivors of torture)
Animal Welfare Institute (or any animal welfare charity)
A Child's Hope Foundation or Catholic Charities (or any charity supporting adoption)
Barnardos New Zealand
Unicef

I intend to follow this scheme with any e-books I publish in the future.

Please consider sharing this post. Thank you :-)

  2. I love this idea. We sponsor a child through Child Fund and an elderly woman through Christian Foundation for Children and Aging...would something like that be OK? Although I feel like I'm stealing your book if it's something we do anyway (and not even on your list)...hmmm, off to think some more...

    1. Thank you so much Amy, it means more than I can say to get your comment. I think Child Fund is great, and I love that you sponsor a child. It's just like Unicef. And an elderly woman - that's something I didnt think of, but what a wonderful thing to do! Thank you for telling me about it, I would love to send you the book to show my appreciation for your kindness to the world, for the charity you already do. I feel silly saying that, as if my book is a reward or something. Darn, I can't get my words out right today!

Would you consider telling us more about what it's like to sponsor a child and especially an elderly woman, so maybe people could be inspired to do the same?

      Blessings.

    2. Me again. I see that you already do share about this charity on your weblog. I hope you don't mind if I provide the link? People should read you anyway! ;-)

  3. Thank you Sarah! I *have* been meaning to write a little more about how sponsoring blesses ME, but I have had a hard time sounding like I'm not bragging..."Oooo, look at me doing soooo much good in the world." Bleh. I will try, though - you are right, if people read about it they may be inspired to help also.

Thank you so much for the pdf of your book - I have emailed you about it.

    this is perfect.

and i'm probably going to steal your idea if i ever get myself organized enough to compile the scraps that are piling up around here.

it's precisely something i've been mulling over for ages....

gah, it's too full of thinky-ness to articulate properly but i just wanted to let you know how incredibly beautiful you are....

    thank you for this.

  6. Sarah- I literally stumbled on your blog over my morning tea. Would moving to South Sudan 5 and a half years ago, adopting 125 kids and choosing to live in a war zone sans running water or electricity suffice? As a mama of many more than I ever dreamed now, I love your thoughts on unschooling and just the poetry of living, stepping lightly on the earth as we travel through our days. As I writer, I delight in the beauty of your woven words as you knit the wind and wrap its freedom around our hearts. My one catch :: our internet is not fast enough to receive a PDF on. Alas. Perhaps, maybe when I back in the West in a few weeks? And proof- well at fromtheunpavedroad.co, there are simply reams of it. So happy to have found this and your other site.- Michele

    1. Michele, what an interesting life you lead :-) Thank you so much for your kind words. You present me with a dilemna which others have given me too. If people are always doing charity, should I just go ahead and give them my book? I honestly don't what what is the right thing to do here. My hope, which often feels silly and small, was to inspire people to do something a little extra in order to obtain the book. It didn't have to be giving - for example, to simply promote this post on their own weblog, in the hope of inspiring others. But I fear it may be vain of me to ask others to value my book.

I shall have to contemplate this further.

    2. Sarah- from one who is also an author: I hardly feel it would be vain to ask that!

Simply my opinion... If it is important enough to write it is important enough to share and get out there. Happy to include a link here on my site about social transformation/charity/creativity sowinghope.net- you present such a unique perspective that I think many would be blessed by.

Please let me know what you decide. Many blessings!
